My Favorite Computer Parts

Building PC’s was always my dream. I used to just wait for the day i could go work for Companies like Alienware or Voodoo. Well like most dreams that one never came true but it never stopped me from learning all I could. I do often build computers for people who hire me. I am always looking for the best up to date parts to use to keep people happy and make sure it will do exactly what they need it to do. Though I have found that just because it’s new doesn’t mean it’s any better than one that may be older. So here is my list of my favorite PC parts and components.

Motherboard: DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra

This DFI motherboard was the beast of its day. It sported the AMD socket A (462) CPU with three slots of DDR ram. When socket A was released everyone was still using SD ram and when DDR hit the shelves this board was there to lead the way. Some features were UV reactive sockets throughout the motherboard. Raid support with a feature that let you use the raid slots as extra IDE slots so you could equip this board with 8 IDE hard drives. Also this motherboard was one of the first to also support a SATA hard drive though only one SATA post was installed on the board. The board was also constructed of black PCB so that with the addition of the UV green parts made this the perfect board for anyone building a computer, though it didn’t come cheap. This was also one of the most expensive motherboards of the day much like any DFI Lanparty board is today. Even with all of our stuff we have today I just can’t think of a reason not to love this board.

Memory: Crucial Ballistix Tracer

Right off the bat when you see this memory you can tell it’s special. With the activity lights flashing at the top and a UFO like glow coming from underneath the heat spreaders this is the memory for any computer enthusiasts. As of this date it’s only available in DDR2 format I would expect to see a DDR3 version coming out in the future.

Processor: AMD Athlon XP

While by today this is no means a fast processor it did have a great part in how we view processors today. This was AMD’s first true shot at CPU fame and also because of this CPU many people realized that a company other than Intel had a shot at making it. This is the processor that cost Intel a lot of business. To this day I still prefer AMD.

Video Card: ATI 2900XT

This video card was one of the first to roll off the new ATI/AMD merger line, and boy did it show. Having never liked ATI over Nvidia I wasn’t sure about how I would like this card. I had been playing with 8800GTX’s for a while so wasn’t sure if anything in this world was ready to tack on the challenge of the 8800. The ATI 2900XT 1gig version took it and ran. This video cards with Crossfire is just unstoppable. To me this is still one of the best cards of all time with the Nvidia 8800 GTX in 2nd.

Case/Tower: ThermalTake Shark

This was a hard choice for me to make. Out of the 2 main computers I use 1 has a shark case and the other is using a CM Stacker 830 Evolution case. The reason I have chose the Thermaltake is that this case is perfect for a small computer or a large one. The CM Stacker only performs well and looks well if you have a major system to go inside it. The ThremalTake is just a great case all around. You could go buy a $500 Dell and put it in this case and it would look just amazing. Even years and years after its release its still not a cheap case, but neither is the Stacker.

Hard Drive: Western Digital Raptor X

Its 10,000 RPM of pure hard drive bliss, and its got a clear panel to view the inside. Need I say more?

Great list, I never knew much about computers til about 3 months before I met you (summer 07 i beleive), so info about that mobo is pretty cool. I still use an AMD athlon processor in my main rig, but I don’t think it’s an XP; it’s a dual core 4800+ @ 2.51 ghz. I’ve had nothing but love for it. Played Crysis at max settings at 1280 x 1024 flawlessly maintaining about 45 fps with my new XFX Nvdia 9800 gtx and 2 gigs Kingston system ram. I don’t have enough insight to make such a list, but I like my Apevia X-plorer case and Apevia PSU. They really brighten up my day (and night).
