AlienWare M15X First Thoughts

Alienware has an all new laptop out for rich people all over the world. The name is the M15X and wow does it make an awesome first impression. But what does it do after you see it the first time can it be as good as the older Alien laptops? Well for styling and looks there isn’t anything that can beat it that’s for sure. All the Apple people cant say anything about the MacBook Pro being so cool because its back-light keyboard anymore. With this one you can even change its color to one of 10 colors.

But what about performance, Well when you combine the fastest Mobile GPU which is a 512mb 8800m GTX, and solid state hard drives you start to see how serius the Aliens are about there technology. They have even tweaked the display which is 15.4 inches but can go to an amazing 1920×1200 resolution which is 1200p for us high definition people. In-fact the only downfall i see of the whole thing is the lack of a AMD CPU which may already be in the works. For now you are forced to choose between 2 Intel Core 2’s or a Core 2 Extreme which is the X9000 model which means its 2.8GHz. The other 2 choices are the T9300 and the T9500. The X9000 comes with an additional $650 price tag. Ok what about memory, well the ones from above have taking care of that also with a choice of 2gb or 4gb from a 667MHz ddr2. The 4gb will set you back another $200. Other things to mention are the options of the Intel turbo memory which speeds up data transfer for an extra $40 and the option of a media remote for $50. Ok now moving on the hard drives. There are many options here since this laptop holds 2 drives. For the first drive i would choose the 64gb solid state drive which is a $775 option but the data transfer is almost instant. I would use this drive just for my o.s while for the second drive i would get the 200gb 7200rpm drive which is very fast for a laptop drive. Most laptop drives are 5400rpm. Next we come to the optical drive which as of right now is 4 options. The cheapest is the plane 8x duel layer burner and the most expensive is a 2x duel layer Blu-Ray reader and burner which is $400.If you want to save $50 you have the option to take the illuminated keyboard out but i cant see the point in doing that. You can even choose the name to be engraved on the nameplate. And a neat new feature AlienWare has added to the options list is that you can now choose the options for your Windows o.s like the main pic that will show up and they will preset the window color, mouse size and a wallpaper for you.

What does all this cost you? Well the M15X starts with a price of $2,149 and with all options goes to almost $6,000. So wile AlienWare isn’t known for making cheap computer solutions i still believe that for the price they are the best computer around for that price range. The neat thing about AlienWare is they they offer you things that isn’t available anyplace else. Even the mighty VoodooPC compare to the performance and there prices are even a little bit more expensive. Although i am not a Dell fan and AlienWare is owned by Dell i still think they have did a good job by keeping to what the company was founded on. Don’t get me wrong you are paying a big price for that alien head logo to be on that piece of plastic called a laptop but at least they give you stuff that is first class and not available anywhere else.

Robin: There marketing is amazing. You can build a computer thats twice as fast for half the price but yet just about everyone, including me still wants one. Ever who is in charge of the Alienware “image” needs a pay raise.

i just sent my order in for a m15x from reviewing my friends m17x (i wanted a smaller computer).. just waiting through the phase game.. although their customer service is terrible, and they are extremely expensive ($2,985), the final product is astounding. and not to mention downright sexy.

Most of the time Alienware’s Support ranks very high even above Apple. Not to mention the reliability is much better than Apple. I think you made a good choice with the M15X. 17 inch laptops are just to big i think.

Thanks for the comment. Should take about a month for you to get your laptop, depending on your config.

it came in less than two weeks! I was very amazed at how quick it actually took to process everything. I even applied for the Titanium account as well. Well, to make a long story short, I’ve fell in love all over again with this machine. (my girlfriend’s getting jealous, hehe)
